Recent Comments for Blogger and Blogger Beta

Hey! I just finished updating my Recent Comments add-on for Blogger to also support the new Blogger Beta.

"But, Blogger Beta can already do Recent Comments!" You might interject. Yes, well... This is a little nicer, because it also has a comment history "More..." and a lot of tweaks to be able to customize its look and feel. It isn't just a Feed, although it does provide a Comment Feed (although this part by itself won't be very helpful I suppose, since Blogger Beta also does a Comment Feed now.)

In the future, I'm going to update the module to grab the comments automatically from the Blogger Comment Feed so that you won't even have to set the Comment Notification Email to make this work.

See, it really works!

I've added the built-in Recent Comments feed to my sidebar as well, so that these two techniques can be compared side-by-side.

Interestingly, it's now 8:30 pm, nearly an hour after I posted the last comment, and it still hasn't shown up in the Comment Atom Feed, nor in the sidebar rendering of that feed, of course. It showed up in my "Recent Comments" add-on, since it is driven off of the notification email that goes out immediately.

Hi, i wonder if u fixed the UTF-8 encoding problem? The thing is that the rollover preview of Chinese recent comments displays successfully on IE, but is still in chaos on my FireFox.
Still nice add-on, great work!

Van, I fixed the rollover comments. Just refresh the page and they should be working in UTF-8 now. I had to send a content-type along with the javascript, and that seemed to have fixed it. I'm glad to hear it works in your IE, because in my english IE it only shows a bunch of squares in the rollover; Firefox works great.

Hai Jeff

Great work, am eager to find out whether it would work in my blog.

For the time being the computer that I am working on does not support chinese character. My blog is in simplified mandarin, will your method of showing recent comment work??

anyway, i will try out once i get hold of my laptop later.

Thanks again ya, and hope to see more innovation :-)

BloodDoc, as far as I know it now works 100% with Chinese characters. Of course, you must be browsing on a computer that also has chinese character support in its fonts :)

I've fixed a few bugs in the system recently. There was a problem with multiple consecutive uppercase characters (related to how I calculate width before ellipsing), and also the emails getting passed on to the blog owner after the comment is registered were coming up with blank subject lines. This should now be resolved. Date format now supports yyyy-mm-dd, m/d/y, or d/m/y automatically - you need to make sure your blog settings have a stamp format that includes the date along with the comments, however - a time alone will not work, and blogger happens to use the same date format for the emails as it does for the comment listing page.

Oh yeah, if anyone notices any other bugs, however minor, please feel free to contact me so that I can work them out for you. We now have 46 blogs signed up on the system with 737 comments processed so far. I am delighted with the speed at which this is picking up, not to mention the diversity of the blogs involved.

Thank you, everyone!
